ICE recently reported its 29th detainee death since the fiscal year began in October, the highest total since the agency was created in 2003. DHS attributed the toll to a detained population around 60,000 and said the in-custody death rate is 0.009%. Among recent cases, ICE said 27-year-old Aled Damien Carbonell-Betancourt was found dead in Miami on April 16 in an apparent suicide attempt; other deaths include a 19-year-old Mexican man and a 41-year-old Afghan father of six who died soon after detention.
Separately, the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good by federal officers in Minneapolis were ruled homicides and are not counted among the 29 reported deaths; no criminal charges have been filed. Lawmakers including Rep. Ilhan Omar called for abolishing ICE, while DHS and Trump defended federal actions and blamed protesters and local leaders. ICE and DHS did not immediately comment on the renaming idea or the detainee deaths.
